Potential UCL- A*STAR 3.5 year PhD studentship for September 2024 on Magnetic Macromolecular Systems for Drug and Gene Targeted Delivery to Cancers

Cancer is still a leading cause of disease worldwide. Magnetic nanoparticles offers an exciting new alternative treatment, with local heating of affected areas allows to eliminate the side effect of current radio-or chemotherapy. The most cutting edge research has recently focused on the combination of heat treatment with traditional cancer drugs. That synergistic effect will enhance the treatment efficacy of both components compared to single mode of treatments.
In this project, we will use molecular self-assembly as a platform to encapsulate anticancer drugs with magnetic nanoparticles for targeted delivery to cancers. Magnetic nanoparticles with high heating efficiency will be synthesized using methods developed in Prof Thanh’s lab either in the presence of the polymer or being coated post synthesis.
We will develop a series of new amphiphilic block copolymers based on microbial biopolyester for long-term controlled release of drugs.
Using a similar strategy, we will develop anticancer drug and gene co-delivery systems for efficient cancer therapy in combination with magnetic heating.
Student is registered in UCL, but needs to be accepted by A*STAR. The candidate required to have 1st or 2:1 class Integrated Masters degree (MSci, MChem, etc.) or 1st or 2:1 BSc plus stand-alone Masters degree Merit/Distinction in Chemistry, Materials Science, and Biochemistry.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions: MSCA Individual Fellowships Call

Call for fellowships for post-doctoral researchers: Postdoctoral researchers who have recently been working overseas may be eligible to apply for a fellowship at University College London, funded by the European Union’s Marie Curie Fellowships scheme. Eligible researchers can be of any nationality, age or research field as long as they have not spent more than 12 months in the UK over the past three years by August 2014.
The fellowships cover the cost of a researcher’s living, relocation, research expenses and overheads for a period of 12 to 24 months (full‐time). Applications are assessed on the basis of the proposed project’s scientific, academic or technical quality and implementation as well as the applicant’s training plans, research experience and achievements.
As a comprehensive, global university, UCL is ideally placed to benefit from this scheme, as fellows can join or add value to established research teams, creating new links between UCL and institutions in other countries. UCL has been awarded nearly 100 Marie Curie Fellowships since 2007.
Researchers who are currently based in a European Union or associated country may apply for a Marie Curie Intra‐European fellowship (IEF), while researchers outside Europe may be eligible for an international incoming fellowship (IIF). Success rates for the Marie Curie IEF and IIF calls were 18% and 12% in 2010 respectively.
The Marie Curie fellowships scheme forms part of the EU’s Framework Programme 7 (FP7) and is designed to encourage the mobility of researchers across national boundaries, support research careers and attract researchers to Europe.

Marie Curie Career Integration Grants (CIG)
This action consists of financial support for long term professional career integration projects in a host organisation of a Member State or associated country. The financial support aims to provide the researcher with the best possible conditions for establishing herself/himself in a long term research career. The CIG provides funding for an eligible researcher to carry out a research project in any field and is intended to allow the researcher to share knowledge acquired overseas and to establish their research careers in Europe.
The grants are awarded for research projects in any field, and are capped at €100k in value and 4 years in duration.

Royal Society Newton International Fellowship
The Newton International Fellowship scheme , run by The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering and The Royal Society, aims to attract the world’s best postdoctoral researchers to the UK.
The two-year Fellowships cover the broad range of the natural and social sciences, engineering and the humanities. The Fellowships include £24,000 per annum to cover subsistence and £8,000 to cover research expenses, plus a one-off relocation allowance of £2,000.
Funding, worth £6,000 per year for ten years after the Fellowship ends, will support follow-on activities to enable Newton Fellows to build long-term links with the UK.
In addition, Newton Fellows will also become members of the international alumni scheme run by Research Councils UK.
The deadline for applications is in Spring.
